Introduction

About Me

I am a strategic resource for my networking partners and clients. I have more than a decade of experience in business operations and process development, as well as in strategically implementing business plans. I am also one of the premier networkers and business coaches in Portland, and I have an avid passion for connecting people with the right resources to help them solve the problems keeping them up at night.

When I'm not working with clients or out networking, I'm writing. I'm author of two books on social media, and I am currently writing a book on networking.

I am an innovative thinker, who brings out of the box perspectives to clients to help them assess and run their business in a more effective manner. I offer seminars, speaking, and coaching to help my clients become better business owners, with streamlined business processes.

I am a certified coach, and have taught at universities, worked as a technical writer, and offered social media consulting in the past.

Profile Questions

What do you like most about your profession?

What I like most about what I do involves helping clients succeed by getting a second set of eyes on their business operations and processes. I like providing a holistic perspective that looks at the entirety of the business instead of just one area such as marketing or sales.

What questions do clients most commonly ask you? How do you respond?

Not so much typical questions, but what I notice is that the majority of my clients don't have business plans or have them, but don't know how to implement them. How I respond involves teaching them how to develop a strategic, proactive approach to running the business. I teach them how to plan and them implement and then refine and streamline their business operations. A lot of times clients will focus on marketing, and fail to realize that marketing is only part of the problem. To run an effective business you need to know how own it, and not just work in it, and that is what I teach my clients to do.

Describe a recent client engagement or project.

I've been working with an accounting firm for the last year. In that year we have worked on defining a business plan, implementing it, exploring and documenting the workflow process for different types of business activities, refining their marketing, and helping the owner develop better pricing policies to get paid on time. Additionally I've helped the owner fire toxic employees and clients, while focusing on finding the right employees and clients for the firm. Since we've started working together, the office environment has improved, employees are happy and the business owner is focused n running the business and growing it.

What are 3 attributes you need to be successful in your industry?

Strategic - You need to be strategic in your approach to helping business owners learn how to run a business. Resourceful - You need to have resources available to help with problems you don't solve. Giving - You need to give because you genuinely want your clients to succeed.

What are the most important things to consider when hiring a service provider in your field?

Is the coach a ra-ra-ra coach who will make you feel good, but not really help you with your business? Does s/he have prior experience owning a business and understand the realities of understanding a business? Does s/he focus on a specialty (such as marketing or sales) or apply a holistic approach that examines the entire business? Does s/he have client testimonials which speak to how s/he has helped his/her clients. These are all good questions to ask. Another one to ask is: What kind of results will you help me achieve, and how will you help me achieve them?

How are you different than others in your profession?

I am different from other people in my profession because I don't specialize in a specific area of business. I apply a holistic model to my work with my clients as I find that if a client has one problem, its usually symptomatic of other problems they are having in their business. By uncovering all the problems and working with the client on them, as well as referring the right people to help, my client moves into a place of permanent success instead of temporary.

What are your biggest professional influences (books, mentors, events)?

From Good to Great by Jim Collins Built to Last by Jim Collins and Jerry Porras The Power of Unpopular by Erika Napoleotano The E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber Mark Hiatt and his approach to networking

How do you typically handle disagreements with clients?

We discuss them together and determine what the best course of action should be. I rarely have disagreements, because as a coach I am there to facilitate their process of change and growth, so I always keep it on their agenda.

Describe your proudest professional accomplishment.

My proudest accomplishment occurs each time I finish up with a client and we both know they don't need me anymore. I have helped them succeed and they are ready to be on their own without my help anymore.
