Profile Questions

What do you like most about your profession?

I'm a people person who's a problem solver. Coaching and consulting give me a chance to interact with a wide array of people with the explicit goal of helping them.

What questions do clients most commonly ask you? How do you respond?

I get a lot of different questions, but most of them, at the core, boil down to "Can you help?" I can say yes in every situation, but I say it where I can. Being honest up front loses me some clients but I wouldn't do it any other way.

Describe a recent client engagement or project.

1. Client had hundreds of reports, all of them running too slowly. I re-architected a critical file in a way that required the fewest possible changes. It took seven hours from engagement to final proof. The reports now run an average of eight times faster. 2. Client has a product which wasn't getting new customers. I showed them how to build a killer demo by understanding what their potential clients want to see. 3.

What are 3 attributes you need to be successful in your industry?

Wide interests - I've been called on to do work in education, trucking, slow boat shipping, food, fund-raising, entertainment, technology, and more. The wider my interests, the more knowledge I bring. Excellent Communication - my work as a journalist, editor, and fiction writer, combined with my expertise as a professional speaker, allow me to cut through arguments and achieve consensus. If people can't agree, they can't move forward. Wide Skills - I've managed a fast food restaurant, been a matre'd in catering, managed programming shops, and run an entertainment business. If each case, I've been hands-on. Manufacturing, importing, retail, research and development, reviewing/testing... my clients have exposed me to a huge range of business and their attendant skill sets.

What are the most important things to consider when hiring a service provider in your field?

An open mind. Plenty of people can tell you how to solve a problem their way. What I need is someone who can solve it in a way that I can maintain. Single-tool vendors need not apply. Single-approach vendors need not apply. I want someone who is interested in solving my specific problem.

How are you different than others in your profession?

I believe in an end-game. For me, coaching or consulting is not an infinite gig. I want to finish tasks. I want to leave and be invited back. I'm not moving in to live off of your business. I'm here to fix what needs fixing.

What are your biggest professional influences (books, mentors, events)?

I have had mentors and (unofficial) coaches all through my professional career. Some of them are wonderful people who helped me along. Some of them were terrible people who taught me patience.

How do you typically handle disagreements with clients?

I don't have a lot of experience with disagreements. Proper discussions on the up front tend to prevent that situation. Where they have come up, I'm very open to agreed solutions.

Describe your proudest professional accomplishment.

My willingness to continue to learn. I learn business processes. I learn tech. I learn everything. The deeper I dive, the happier I am.

Tiago and the Masterless

Publication: HDWPbooks
Date: May 13, 2014
Interrogative series: Book 1 or 30. Buy it on Kindle, Nook, and Kobo. Tiago hadn't realized he had fallen asleep until he awoke. He was still on the bridge. Brushing the hair out of his eyes, he started calling up the stations from where he sat – not yet clear-headed enough to walk over to each one. The computer showed him a blue-white planet. It was an estimate, not a live feed, because the planet was on the far edge of normal sensor range. Below the image was a series of readings which confirmed radio activity. Intelligence pattern – confirmed. He rubbed his eyes and pulled himself unsteadily to his feet. With a force of will, Tiago walked away from the console. He shook his head to clear it. There might be people. He wanted to just sit there and stare at the data – at the possibilities manifest in the data – but that wasn't productive. What he needed to do now was figure how how he felt about the data. It was one thing to hope for contact; it was another to risk it. They could be monsters. They could be brutal savages. Worse, they could be the sort of highly evolved savages he was fleeing. He needed to think about this.
